In 1979, the first Snowdown featured primarily snow sport competition. Over the years, the event has grown to a five-day celebration featuring all sorts of wacky events, costumes, a parade, Follies show and more built around a different theme each year meant to promote commerce, tourism, and fun. An advertisement for the first Snowdown is shown below, catalog number 03.6.1.

The Animas Museum is proud to participate in Snowdown events as well as to be a repository of Snowdown memorabilia. Over the years, the Museum has sponsored events such as the Pie Throwing contest in 2010 where the highest bidder got to take aim at Fort Lewis College’s Professor Duane Smith as well as members of the City Council. In 2014, the Silver Bullet was hidden on the Museum property. A replica of the Animas City School even floated down Main Ave. during the 2015 Parade of Lights. Photo below courtesy of Carolyn Bowra.
