Facade Easements
From its inception, the La Plata County Historicaly Society has been concerned with the preservation of the historical character and architecture of downtown Durango. The Society holds facade easements for four buildings listed below, all of which are part of the Main Avenue Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means that any changes to the outside structure must be approved by the Board of Director's Facade Easement Committee. The Society also inspects the exterior of the building annually to insure the buildings are appropriately maintained.
These buildings include:
- The Jarvis Building at 1001 Main Avenue
- The Masonic Building at 144 E. 9th Street
- The Ritter Block at 840-846 Main Avenue
- The Schneider Block at 988-990 Main Avenue
To understand what we look for when doing annual inspections, download a copy of the Easement Monitoring Inspection List here.
Before making any changes to the outside of the building, download a copy of the Proposal for Alterations Form here and submit the completed form to easements@animasmuseum.org.
A list of historic preservation contractors maintained by the State Historic Fund can be found here. Note that this list is voluntarily populated.
