The Animas Museum's collections consist of artifacts, photographs, and archives that were made or used in La Plata County. Over 20,000 items are cataloged in our database. Our collections staff and volunteers continue to process, catalog and care for incoming acquistions.
In September of 2013, we were awarded a Museums for America two-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to process artifacts and move them out of our downstairs temporary storage area, to start photographing the entire collection of three dimensional artifacts, and to research the families and businesses associated with as many artifacts as possible. The project ended on September 30, 2015. During the project, we processed and moved over 2000 items into permanent storage, photographed over 4000 three-dimensional artifacts, researched 12 local family groups and institutions, and added to the provenance of over 18,000 items in the collections.
A big part of the IMLS grant project was the development of a database of all of our cataloged, photographed and scanned items that is available to the public. At present, the database is available only in the museum's research library. The video below is an introduction to the public database.
